Kamoa-Kakula Copper Project

Building on the successful execution of benchmark projects like the Luanshya Copper Mine in Zambia, Hengda Jianghai has achieved a strategic breakthrough in transnational mining services. Our company has been awarded the emergency drainage and mine rehabilitation project for the Kamoa-Kakula Copper Mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo – the world's second-largest copper mine – demonstrating its technological leadership and rapid response capabilities.

This landmark project has set a global application record in the submersible pump industry, achieving an unprecedented single-unit flow rate of 2,200 m³/h. This remarkable accomplishment establishes a new Chinese benchmark for emergency rescue operations in deep-well mining projects worldwide.

The Kamoa-Kakula Copper Project in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) ranks among the world's most significant copper mining developments. Located in the Kolwezi region of the DRC, the project is jointly developed by Ivanhoe Mines and Zijin Mining Group, with participation from the DRC government. With proven copper resources exceeding 50 million tons, it stands as the world's second-largest copper deposit. The project boasts an exceptional average grade of 6-8% – substantially higher than the global average of 1-2% – making it one of the highest-grade large-scale copper mines worldwide.

On May 18, 2025, a mining-induced seismic event at the copper mine triggered a sudden rise in underground water levels, leading to the suspension of all underground operations on May 20. A complete evacuation of personnel and equipment was executed on May 25, prompting a global search for suitable drainage equipment.

The Mining Division obtained project details simultaneously from Ivanhoe Mines, Zijin Mining Group, and JCHX Mining on May 26, immediately deploying a specialized team for rapid engagement. Through multiple rounds of technical consultations, the project ultimately selected our company's drainage solution: five sets of BQ2200-450/7-4200KW (10V) pumps with integrated electrical control systems.

This successful single-source procurement represents another remarkable achievement following our Luanshya Copper Mine project with China Nonferrous Metals, further solidifying our expertise in large-scale mine drainage and rehabilitation. The Kamoa-Kakula project, being a world-class copper mine, marks a significant milestone for Hengda Jianghai's entry into the international premier market with high-end mining equipment systems. This breakthrough positions the company to secure additional contracts in key mining regions such as Africa and South America.

Pumps 1 and 2 were successfully installed and commenced drainage operations by the end of August 2025. Pumps 3 and 4 followed with complete installation and initiated pumping on September 11, 2025. All four units have maintained stable operation since deployment, achieving progressive water level reduction. The Kakula mine drainage project remains on track for completion by the end of November.
